Zwillingskuscheldecken - Twin receiving blankets

Kuschelig - flauschig - klein, aber fein - so sollten zwei kleine Babydeckchen sein. Gut gut, ich höre schon auf zu reimen, darin bin ich echt nicht gut. Aber ich habe mal wieder etwas, das ich euch zeigen kann. Bekannte von uns haben Zwillinge bekommen. Zwei kleine Jungs. Das Zimmer wurde in Taupeblau gestrichen, Bärchen an der Wand und Heißluftballone als Mobile. Da kann man doch nur diesen schönen Stoff von Westphalenstoffe nehmen. Kombiniert mit einem weichen Leinen in Blau und fertig ist das Babydeckchen.

Cozy, warm, small and cute - thats how baby blankets should be. I have something to show to you. Friends of us received twins. Two little guys. The room was decorated in blue with small bears on the walls and hot air ballons hanging over the small beds. I couldn`t resist and bought this cute hot air ballons fabric of Westphalenstoffe. I bought the blue soft linen and was ready to start.

Aber, ich muss ja doppelt nähen, es gibt ja auch zwei Kinder. Zweimal die gleiche Decke wollte ich nicht verschenken. Das fand ich doof und langweilig. Also habe ich die Decken gleich, aber doch unterschiedlich gemacht. So passen sie zusammen, sind aber doch individuell. Genäht habe ich diese Deckchen nach der Anleitung von Jenny Doan, Missouri Star Quilt Company. Ich habe lediglich das kleinere Qadrat zuerst als einfaches Patchwork zusammengesetzt. But I have to sew twice, there are two kids. I didn`t want to sew the same blanket two times. That is boring. I made the blankets the same, but diffrent. Like that they fit together but they are individual, too. I made these receiving blankets sewing the tutorial of Jenny Doan, Missouri Star Quilt Company. I simply made an easy patchwork on the smaller square. You can find the tutorial here.

Diese Deckchen habe ich vor ca. 3 Wochen an die frisch gebackenen Eltern übergeben. Sie wurden gleich bewundert und sind sicher schon im Einsatz. Manchmal muss es garnichts mega aufwändiges sein, das man verschenkt, denn auch die einfachen Sachen sind immer wieder ein Hingucker.

Das wars heute von mir, ich werde mir jetzt einen neuen Bügelbrettüberzug nähen, den alten habe ich, inklusive dem Bügeleisen, leider leider mit aufbügelbaren Flies eingesaut. Dann kaufe ich morgen noch ein neues Bügeleisen.


I gifted this blankets three weeks ago to the new parents. They loved the blankets and I think theys will use them already. Sometimes, simple is better than completly complicated. And simple things are always looking as good as others.

Thats it for today. I am going to make myself a new ironboard cover. I missused a sticky and beasty batting and ruined my old cover and my iron. And tomorrow, I buy a new iron.

Minis in work

Hier wird ab und zu mal wieder fleißig genäht. Also wenn ich mal an der Maschine sitze. Die meiste Zeit verbringe ich abends auf dem Sofa mit meinen Hexagons und da gibt es im Moment nur Hintergrundhexagone zu fotografieren, nicht sehr spannend.  Aber hin und wieder zieht es mich dann doch mal eine Stunde an die Maschine und ich nähe etwas. Neulich habe ich beispielsweise meine blaue Resteschachtel vom Hochzeitsquilt rausgeholt und jede Menge blauer Quadrate geschnitten und gebügelt.

Sometimes I do sew a little bit. When I sit next to my mashine. But most of my evenings I spend sitting on the couch and sewing hexagons. Lots of hexagons for my la passion quilt - but these are only background hexagons, nothing great to show. But sometimes for an hour or two I sit down and sew something. I startet a Mini Cathedral Window to use up my lots of leftovers from the blue weddingquilt. I pulled out the box, startet cutting lots of squares and startet ironing.

Dazu ein paar weiße Quadrate und ein paar grüne und schon kann man loslegen mit einem Cathedral Window Muster à la Jenny Doan, hier bei mir aber mit 1,5 inch Quadraten. Nach der Hälfte war dann mal der Punkt erreicht an dem ich mir zwar dachte, WARUM zum Teufel machst du das? - aber der hat sich dann auch wieder gelegt. 

Combine these with some white squares and add some green and you can start with the Jenny Doan method - I am working with 1,5 inch hexagons! After half of the piece I thought WHY are you doing that - but this passed away after some minutes.

Es fordert ganz schön Präzision wenn man das Muster ordentlich haben will. Vor allem bei der Größe.

You need a lot of precision to get this pattern straight and good. Especial when you are working with this size.
 

Jetzt nur noch das Muster einnähen. Nur noch. Hmmm. Ich glaube, das zeige ich ein anderes Mal.

Starry Night - finished Quilt

Endlich kann ich euch den fertigen Starry Nights Quilt zeigen. Dieser Quilt ist nämlich inzwischen bei seiner neuen Besitzerin angekommen und zwar in Neuseeland. Das ganze war ein Hochzeitsgeschenk.

Finally, I can show you the finished starry night quilt. This Quilt finally arrived at its destination - New Zealand. It was a wedding gift.

 Genäht habe ich den Quilt nach dem Buch "Blue" von Vanessa Christenson.

I used the pattern "Starry Night" from the book "blue" from Vanessa Christenson.

Kuschelig und knuddelig ist dieser Quilt und ich liebe dieses Foto. Wir hatten viel Spaß beim Bilder machen.

It is so cozy und lovely and I absolutly love this picture. We had so much fun making pictures.

Gequiltet habe ich diesen Quilt auf einer Bernina Q 24 Longarm Maschine. Herrliches Teil - was? Der Quilt oder die Maschine? Beides würde ich sagen.

I quilted this quilt on a Bernina Q24 Longarm mashine. I love it - what? The quilt or the mashine? I would say both!

Auf der Rückseite habe ich alle verewigt, die an diesem Quilt beteiligt waren. Die Hände habe ich mit Freezerpaper zuerst aufgebügelt und anschließend freihand herumgenäht. Dann habe ich die Rückseite in die Longarm eingespannt.

On the backing I showed everyone who was giving something to this gift. I traced the hands on freezer paper, ironed them on and sewed around them, using my free motion foot. Then I used this piece as the backing.

Ich finde dieser Quilt ist wunderschön geworden und nach all den Stunden Arbeit daran hätte ich Ihn am liebsten selbst behalten. So ist das nun mal.

I absolutly love how this quilt turned out and after all these hours of sewing it was hard to give it away. That`s the way it is.

Es ist ein Elch entsprungen - It`s a moose

Habe ich mal erwähnt, dass ich Elche, Rentiere und Hirsche wirklich gerne mag? Und während ich diese Zeilen schreibe, fällt mir auf - ALLE haben ein Geweih:-) Ich finde, das sind einfach majestätische Tiere und irgendwie doch ganz knuffig. Jedenfalls ist mir neulich beim obligatorischen Gang durch den Stoffladen meines Vertrauens dieser wunderschöne Elchstoff von Michael Miller in die Hände gefallen. Ich hatte sowieso vor mir so einen tollen Turnbeutel zu nähen, aber mit Elchstoff - Keine Frage, dieser Stoff ward sofort gekauft. Zuhause sofort in die Waschmaschine, Trockner und ab zum Bügeln. Endlich Zeit zum nähen. Lange genug hat es gedauert, aber nun, endlich, hab ich mal wieder genäht. Und dann gleich einen ELCHRUCKSACK? - Meine Mutter hätte ihn wohl am liebsten gleich selbst behalten, denn das Wort ELCHRUCKSACK schrieb sie ganz groß in ihrer Antwort auf mein Bild. Nö, das ist meiner.

Did I mentioned that I love moose, reindeers and deers? And during this moment, writing these words I realized ALL of them have horns. I think, these animals are really majestic and kind of super cozy, too. During my last normal walk through my favourite fabric store I found this cute moose fabric by Michael Miller. I planned on sewing a sport bag for myself but with a moose fabric - no question, this fabric was bought immediatly. At home I throw it into the washing maschine, the dryer and off to the iron. Then, after a long time, I sewed - I absolutly loved it. And then starting right with a MOOSE Back Pack? - My mom would like to keep it for herself, maybe that is the reason why she wrote MOOSE Back Pack in big letterns as an answer to my picture. But no, that`s mine.

Ich denke, er hat die perfekte Größe für die Arbeit, ich habe mal die Hände frei und ich habe so einen coolen Turnbeutel, mit dem derzeit alle Rumlaufen. Aber meiner hat ELCHE :-)
Es ist wirklich nicht leicht ein Bild zu zaubern, wenn der Mann nicht zu Hause ist und man eben mal ein Bild braucht. Spiegel, das müsste gehen. Ich glaube nach 20 Bildern ist dann mal eines halbwegs scharf und schön geworden. Spaß hat es auf jedenfall gemacht. Morgen wird er dann gleich ausgeführt. Ich freue mich schon.
Genäht habe ich den Turnbeutel nach der Anleitung von Frau Fadenschein. Eine freie Anleitung auf ihrem Blog. Hier findest du die Anleitung zum nachnähen. Ich habe meinen Beutel etwas breiter und höher gemacht und auch den Boden tiefer gestaltet. Und ich habe eigene Träger genäht, keine Kordeln genommen. Geht aber genauso:-)

I think it has the perfect size for going to work, hands are free and I have a cool sports bag that everyone has at the moment. BUT mine has MOOSE :-) 
It is really hard to create good pictures wearing a sports bag and there is no husband that can make a shot. I tried the thing with the mirror - and after 20 pics I did a good shot. But it was fun and tomorrow I will take my moose off to work.
I sewed the sports bag using this tutorial from "Frau Fadenschein". It is a german free pattern on her blog. Here you can find the pattern. I made mine a little bit bigger and higher and created a bigger bottom. And I didn`t use cord to carry it, I made some out of fabric. Works well,too.

Tutorial: kleine Utensilos - small baskets

Klein aber fein und doch Schmuck sollte die eigene Hausdeko einer Näherin sein. Eigentlich...
Meist jedoch haben die, die die schönsten Sachen auf Erden kreieren das wenigste davon zu Hause. Denn es gibt da Freunde, Kollegen und Familie, die zu Besuch kommen und dann die tollen Sachen sehen. Ohh, das würde mir auch gefallen, kann ich das haben, machst du mir auch eins. Und zack, alles wieder weg. Gut wir Näherinnen, wir geben gerne. Aber das ist der Grund, wieso in unserem Heim eher wenig von uns herumsteht.

Aber das wird geändert. Mit diesem blitzschnellen Körbchen oder Utensilo. Hier kommt die angekündigte Anleitung. Perfekt für diesen ersten verregneten Herbsttag.

The decoration in teh house of a sewer should be small but beautiful and creativ. Normally... But most of them have very less stuff at home because they gift everything to their friends and family. Family members, collegues and friends come to visit and see the newest collection and ohh, I love that,  can I have that, can you make me one, too? And then - nothings is left over. Sewers are very givable, and that is the reason why we do not own much of sewed stuff.

We are going to change that. With these small and fast baskets. Here is the tutorial how to sew it. Perfect for this first rainy day in autumn.

Zuschneiden - Wir brauchen immer einen Stoff für Außen, einen Stoff für Innen und ein Flies. (Ich nehme hier Jeans Stoff, da geht auch das fluffige Flies, welches grade als Rest herumlag). Ich verwende bei normalen Nähten immer eine viertel Inch Naht (ca. 0,6 mm)

Für die kleinen Körbchen brauchen wir:

2 x Rechteck 20 x 15 cm Jeansstoff für das äußere Körbchen
2 x Rechteck 20 x 16 cm grüner Stoff für das innere Körbchen (nur bei der Arbeit mit Jeans 1cm breiter schneiden, Sonst 20 x 15 cm)
2 x Rechteck 20 x 15 cm Flies zum stabilisieren

Cutting - we will always need a fabric for the outside, the inside and some batting (I am using the fabric of leftover jeans and with that you can use a fluffy batting, too). I always sew with a quarter inch seam allowance.

For the small baskets we need:

2 x rectangle  8" x 6" inch jeans for the outside of the basket.
2 x rectangle  8" x 6,5" inch fabric for theinside of the basket (cut inside fabric half an inch higher only when you work with jeans, No jeans 8 x 6 ")
2 x rectangle  8" x 6" inch batting to stabilize

Als erstes legen wir die Jeans rechts auf rechts aufeinander und fügen oben und unten ein Flies hinzu. So wie im Bild oben zu sehen ist.

Wer sein Außenkörbchen mit Nähten, Bändern oder Quilting verzieren will, der sollte das tun, ehe die beiden Teile mit den Fliesen zusammengenäht werden!

First of all we lay the jeans pieces right sides togehter and add a batting to each side of it. Like you can see in the picture above.

If you want to add ribbons, quilting or special things like labels to the outside, you should do that before you sew them together.

Dann nähen wir drei Seiten zu und zwar durch alle vier Lagen. Die Nadeln waren zum fixieren der vier Lagen und werden gleich wieder herausgezogen.

Then you sew through all four layers on three sides. I used pins to fix the sandwich. Remove them after sewing.

Dann nehmen wir den grünen Stoff und nähen ebenfalls die Seiten ab, lassen in diesem Fall oben offen und am Boden eine ca. 5-6 cm große Wendeöffnung.

Then we take the fabric and sew on all three sides, but we leave an 3,5 " inch opening to turn the basket later on on the bottom.

Nun müssen wir die Ecken abnähen oder wie es im Englischen so schön heißt "boxing out the corners". Dazu gehe ich mit dem Zeigefinger in die Ecke und drücke von Innen dagegen, während ich mit der anderen Hand die Nahtzugabe auseinander drücke. Grade bei Jeans und Flies in Kombi sollte man die Nahtzugabe auseinander drücken, sonst wird das ziemlich knubbelig.

Now we need to box out the corners. I love this phrase: "Boxing out corners":-) First I put the corner on the top of my finger to give some pressure on it while I fingerpress the seam open. Especial when you work with jeans and batting you should open that seam to get less bulk.

Dann, bitte aufpassen, Nadeln sind spitz:-), pinnt man die Nähte exakt aufeinander, sodass quasi unter dem Linealstrich wie auf dem Bild die Nadel die genaue Mitte bildet und beide Nähte fixiert. Dadurch bekommen wir eine genau passende Naht.
Wichtig beim Ecken abnähen: So tief wir ihr das Lineal anlegt, so breit muss die Nahtzugabe von der Mittelnaht zu den Seiten sein, also ist die Naht doppelt so lang wie das Lineal tief anliegt.

Schaut euch mal die Skizze hier an:

Then, please be careful - pins are sharp:-), you pin the seams together exactly. The ruler should lay on the straight seam and the pin should show the middle like in the picture above and fix both seams. With this method we get a perfect matching seam. 
Very important when you box out corners: As wide as you lay down your ruler at the middle seam - the seam to each side has the same size - and then the seam to make the bottom is twice as long as the ruler lays down on the middle seam.

Das müsste doch jetzt passen oder? Bei diesem Körbchen hier habe ich das Lineal 4,5 cm (1,75 Inch) tief angelegt, das heißt wir haben von der Mittelnaht nach rechts und links auch 4,5 cm (1,75 Inch) Platz und das heißt unser Boden des Körbchens wird insgesamt 9 cm (3,5 Inch) breit.

That should work, right? With this basket I layed the ruler on 1,75 " inch down and that means we have seams going from the middle to the left and right with a length of 1,75 " inch each and that means, our bottom has the total with of 3,5 " inch.

Das wird dann schön auf der angezeichneten Naht abgenäht und das machen wir sowohl am Jeans/Flies Außenkörbchen, als auch beim Innenkörbchen. Die Ecken schneiden wir ab.

Then you sew a straight seam on the marked line. We do that to the jeans/batting basket and to the inside basket. The leftover corners need to be trimmed.

Dann habt ihr diese zwei Körbchen. Das Jeanskörbchen/Außenkörbchen bitte wenden, sodass das Flies innen ist.

Then you have these two baskets. The jeans-outside baskets need to be turned outside in, the batting should lay inside after turning.

Dann stecken wir das Innenkörbchen mit der rechten Seite nach innen schauend auf das Jeanskörbchen. Dann steckt ihr die Nähte offen aneinander und fixiert das Körbchen auch in der Mitte mit Nadeln. Dann wird einmal rund herum genäht. Wir lassen keine Öffnung!

Then you take the inside basket, right side is inside and you put it on to the outside baskets, facing right side to the jeans side. Then match the side seams and pin. Now we sew a quarter inch seam around the whole top circle. We do not leave an opening!

Anschließend wenden wir das Körbchen durch die Öffnung am Boden der Innentasche, hier auf dem Bild seht ihr was ich meine.

Then you turn the basket through the small whole on the bottom of the inside fabric we made in the beginning. On the picture you can see what I mean.

Umgedreht schaut das sehr merkwürdig aus, aber ehe wir das Schlauchding wieder in ein Körbchen verwandeln, schließen wir die Wendeöffnung mit ein paar geraden Stichen auf der Nähmaschine.

When it is turned, it looks a little weird, but wait to turn the inside in, we close the opening on the bottom of the inside fabric with some straight stitching with the sewing mashine.

Nun stecken wir das Futter wieder in die Tasche. Und jetzt kommt der Clou bei der Arbeit mit dem Jeansstoff und auch der Grund, wieso wir beim innen Körbchen 1 cm mehr Stoff gebraucht haben:
Jeans lässt sich zwar schön umlegen, ABER dann ist die Kante vom Körbchen sehr knubbelig und dick. Außerdem wollen wir das Körbchen in dieser Größe garnicht am oberen Rand umfalten. Wir lassen die Jeans und das Flies einfach gerade und falten das innere Körbchen nach unten. Dadurch erhalten wir diesen schönen Rand, den wir nun einfach festnähen.

Now we put the inside fabric in place - to the inside of the fabric. And now, there is the trick with working with jeans and the reason why we needed half an inch more hight for the inside: Jeans can be fold easily, BUT then the edge of the basket is very bulky and thick. And with this size we do not want to fold the edge down on that small basket. We leave the jeans and batting unfolded. We only fold the fabric around the jeans and we get this nice edge. We just need to stitch that down.

Mit einem etwas größeren Stich nähe ich hier einfach im Nahtschatten einmal rundherum und Fertig ist das Körbchen.

Willkommen in der Nähwerkstatt - welcme to my sewing garage

Jaja, wenn eine Freundin zum nähen vorbei kommt, dann gibt es immer viele Fragen. Diesmal ging es darum kleinere Utensilos herzustellen, die auf einem Schreibtisch oder im Bad für die kleinen Dinge des Lebens verwendet werden sollten. Aber zu erst haben wir einen großen Brotkorb genäht.
Auf dem Bild oben seht ihr die normale Variante eines Brotkorbs oder Utensilos. Anschließend haben wir uns an einer kleinen Variante versucht. Mit Jeans. Ich muss sagen, dann hat das ganze schon gleich viel mehr Stand und es sieht schon sehr peppig aus.
Aber damit nicht alles. Wir haben verschiedene Bodengrößen und Farben ausgetestet. Wie im Labor.

Many many questions need to be answered, when a good friend of mine comes for sewing. This time we were sewing these utensils and small baskets für the bathroom or the desk in the office. We started with the big one for the kitchen. A basket for bread an sweet stuff. On the pic above you can see the normal version. Then we tried a smaler version. With jeans. I love the look and it adds more constancy to the utensil. But we weren`t finished. We tried out diffrent sizes for the bottom, the hight and colors. Like a labor.

Am Ende kamen also hier noch diese drei Körbe hinzu. Ich habe mich, nachdem die Freundin wieder weg war, nochmal hingesetzt und alle Schritte dokumentiert und fotografiert. In den nächsten Tagen stelle ich eine Anleitung für euch online. Damit könnt ihr dann auch Utensilos in den Größen, wie ihr sie haben wollt nähen. Ganz einfach.

We ended up with another three baskets/utensils. After my friend went home, I took some time to sew another one to take pictures of all steps and did a good documentation. In the next days, I will write you a tutorial to sew these smal baskets. And then you can make them by yourself in all the sizes you like to have. Very simple and easy.

Longarmquilting with Bernina

Ein Traum ist wahr geworden. Vergangene Woche war ich bei Frau Klaus von Bernina und habe genäht. Einen Tag lang durfte ich dieses Prachtexemplar nutzen und ich habe zwei Quilts gequiltet. Den Sampler, den ihr oben seht habe ich mit speziell an den Blöcken angepassten Mustern gequiltet. In das Sashing habe ich ein Freemotion Muster gearbeitet und je nach Block habe ich die Muster, die gepatcht waren herausgearbeitet.
Diese Bernina Q 24 hat einen 3,50 m großen Rahmen. Wenn man so davor steht, dann ist das schon ein Mega Gerät. All diese vielen Rollen und Verschlüsse, da muss man schon wissen wo man was hintun muss. Frau Klaus hat mir beim "Beladen" der Maschine geholfen und mir alles noch einmal sehr gut erklärt. Dann ging es auch schon los.
Während ich an meinen Quilts arbeitete, lies neben mir Frau Klaus die zweite Bernina rattern. Gemeinsam wurde gequiltet bis zum Umfallen.

Last week a dream came true. I was sewing at Ms. Klaus of Bernina. One day this beauty was there for me and my sewing time. I quilted two beautiful quilts. I quilted this sampler in the picture above with individual patterns fitting to the blocks. And I used freemotionquilting on the boarders and the sashings.  This Bernina Q24 has a 3,5 meter long frame. Standing right in front of it - this is a big mashine. All the rolls and closers - you better should know what goes to which part. Ms. Klaus helped me loading the mashine and showed me all the tricks and everything and then, I could start right off.  While I was working on my quilts Ms. Klaus worked on her secound Bernina. Together we quilted the whole day long.

Als nächstes kam dann der blaue Quilt auf die Maschine. Wenn ich bedenke, was das für eine Arbeit gewesen wäre, dieses Monster unter der kleinen Mashine zu quilten, so bin ich um die Möglichkeit mit einer Longarm zu arbeiten sehr - sehr - sehr - sehr dankbar.  Allein was dieser Quilt mit seinen tausend Nähten so wiegt. Phu. So stand ich ganz entspannt an der Longarm und lies mein all over Muster entstehen. Ich habe abwechselnd Monde und Halbmonde gequiltet, was dem ganzen ein sehr fluffiges und kuscheliges Aussehen verleiht. Passend zu den Sternen auf dem Quilt.

After the sampler I loaded the blue quilt on the mashine. This would have been really hard to quilt this monster on may regular mashine and I am so happy to get the possibility to work with the longarm. So so so thankful. Simply the weight of this quilt is hard to handle because of all these seams. Phu. But with the longarm, I was really relaxed and let my all over pattern grow. I quilted moons and half moons all over and this gives the quilt a really fluffy and cozy touch. And it fits perfect to the stars on the quilt.

Jetzt muss ich "nur" noch das Binding dran machen und dann ist das Hochzeitsgeschenk fertig.

Was die Longarm Maschine von Bernina betrifft, so ist die Technik mal wieder unschlagbar. Schweizer Präzisionsarbeit eben. Durchdacht von oben bis unten. So ist bei jeder notwendigen Stelle wieder ein Fadenabschneider vor Ort, die Bedienung über das Touchscreenfeld ist selbsterklärend und auch die Belegung der an den Griffen angebrachten Tasten ist frei wählbar. Ergonomisch kann man sich hier alles einstellen, was das Quilterherz begehrt, damit man auch super entspannt und bequem arbeiten kann. Die ganzen Führungsschienen, auf denen die Maschine "läuft" sind alle aus einem Guss, hier gibt es keine Ruckler und Übergangswackler im Quilt. Und es gibt an beiden Seiten des Rahmens Ablageflächen für diverse Utensilien, Scheren, Nadeln, was auch immer gebraucht wird. Bernina eben. Wie auch bei meiner kleinen Nähmaschine des schweizer Herstellers ist an alles gedacht.


Now I "only" have to sew on the binding and finish this wedding gift.

About the longarm of Bernina: This technic is perfect. Typical swiss precision work. They thought about everything. On each corner you found a handy thread cutter right on the place where you need it. The handling with the touchscreen is so easy to learn and to handle - just like the positioning of the switches on the handles - and you can individualize it. The handles are egonomic designed and you can adjust erverything how you need it to work super relaxed and comfortable. All the table tracks are made out of one piece and there are no wiggly crossings on the quilt. On both sides there are spaces to put in needles, scissors and what ever you need. Like on my small mashine the swiss producer thought on everything.

Sampler Layout Options

Sampler zu nähen ist immer so eine Sache. Man steht am Ende des Jahres mit 12 oder 20 wunderschönen einzelnen Blöcken da und dann, hmm, was macht man dann. Diese 20 Blöcke habe ich 2012 nach Anleitung von Amy Gibson bei ihrem Block of the Month bei Craftsy genäht. Ich habe ganz viele verschiedene Prints und Stoffe verwendet, da ich das erstmal ausprobieren wollte. Vier Jahre lagen diese 20 Blöcke in einer Schublade und haben auf den richtigen Moment gewartet.

Ich habe im Garten verschiedene Layouts ausprobiert. Oben seht ihr das Layout ganz ohne Sashing und ohne alles. Finde ich zu unruhig. Da fehlt die Trennung der einzelnen Blöcke.

Sewing sampler is a thing. At the end of the year you are finished with 12 oder 20 blocks with beautiful and different patterns and then, what are you doing with them? These 20 blocks were sewn after the pattern from Amy Gibsons Block of the Month in 2012. I`ve used many different prints and fabrics because I just wanted to try all the patterns. These 20 blocks were sleeping four years in a closet and they waited for the right moment.

I tried out some layout options in the garden. In the picture above I show you a layout without any sashing. But I find this too crazy, there is no room for the different patterns.

Im zweiten Bild seht ihr ein Layout mit einem angedeuteten Sashing. Dadurch wird der Quilt etwas größer und die Blöcke haben eine Trennung  und das ganze erhält etwas Ordung. Hier kann man noch Cornerstones einbauen, dann erhält das Sashing noch etwas Pepp.

In the secound picture you can see a layout with sashing. With the space between the blocks the quilt gets bigger and the blocks have room and the sashing gives a little bit of separation. You can use cornerstones between the blocks, then the sashing gets a lot of pop.

Hier im Bild seht ihr die Blöcke "On Point" gesetzt. Dabei werden die Blöcke diagonal gesetzt und dazwischen mit Hintergrundfarbe aufgefüllt. Dadurch wird der Quilt nochmal größer als die Version mit Sashing und die einzelnen Blöcke haben Platz um ihr unterschiedliches Aussehen  gut auszustrahlen.

Ich werde dann mal Version Sashing mit Cornerstones nähen. On Point wird mir dieser Quilt zu groß.

In the last picture you can see the blocks set "on point". The blocks were set diagonal with some empty blocks between the patched blocks. The quilt gets really bigger working with this layout and the blocks get there place to feel free to show their pattern. 

I am going to sew the version with sashing and cornerstones. On points, this quilt will get too big. Happy sewing.

Kreative Quiltrückseiten - creativ quilt backs

Die Quiltrückseiten sind immer so eine Sache. Meist sind sie zusammengestückelt aus den Resten des Quilttops - man sieht sie ja eh nicht. Bei mir ist der Stoff bis auf das grün bei diesem Quilt gut aufgegangen. Also kaufte ich noch einen einheitlichen blauen Stoff, setzte in die Mitte den die übrig gebliebenen Dreiecke zu einem weiteren Musterblock zusammen und applizierte rund herum die Hände derjenigen, die sich an diesem Geschenk beteiligen. Auf jede rechte Hand habe ich mit Stoffmalfarbe die Namen geschrieben und das ganze dann mit Freezerpaper (eine Art Transferflies mit beidseitiger Haftung nach dem Bügeln, toll, so braucht man nach dem Bügeln keine Nadeln mehr) appliziert. Nach dem Bügeln habe ich noch jede Hand mit einem einfachen Stich und Freihand umrandet. Beim Waschen franzen die Ränder etwas aus, aber das gibt dem ganzen dann ein tolles aussehen.

Ich finde es immer schön, wenn auf der Quiltrückseite nochmal ein Musterblock aus der vorderen Seite auftaucht. Das gibt dem ganzen einen schönen Abschluss finde ich.

Ich muss ehrlich sagen, irgendwie bin ich ganz froh, wenn dieser Quilt fertig ist. Diese blauen Stoffe fusseln und fusseln, was das Zeug hält. Wahnsinn. Wenn der Quilt fertig ist, muss ich erstmal mein Nähzimmer entfusseln. Allein während der Näharbeiten für diesem Quilt habe ich 4 Mal meine Bernina entfusselt und neu geölt. Viele Nähte brauchen das auch, aber was da an blauen Flusen zum Vorschein kam, das ist nicht mehr schön.

Quiltbacks are always tricky. Mostly they were made of the leftover pieces from the front - you do not see the back laying around. With this Quilt my fabrics were all good and I had some small pieces left over in green. I went to my fabric store and bought some blue fabric and pieced one last block for the back from the left over triangles from the top. Around the star I set all the hands of the persons that join this family gift. On each right hand I wrote the name and traced the hands with freezerpaper on the backing. (I love Freezerpaper, by the way). After ironing the hands on the back, I sewed the hands on with a straight stitch, using my freemotion foot. After washing the fabric will ripp off a little bit on the edges - I love that look.

I alway prefer to see a repetition of the pattern from the front in the backing. It gives the quilt a clean finish.

I have to admit to be happy when this quilt is finished. These blue fabrics makes a lot of fuzzels. Crazy. After finishing this quilt I have to clean my whole sewing room. Sewing this quilt I cleaned and oiled my bernina about four times. A lot of seems needed the oil, right, but I took soooo many blue fuzzels out of my mashine - that is not nice.

Der Weg vom Stoff zum Quilt, Teil 2 - The way fabric becomes a quilt, part 2

Nadeln. Als Quilter braucht man derer viele. Am liebsten mag ich diese hier, die mit dem bunten Kopf. Die ganz klassischen Stecknadeln. Nadelkissen habe ich auch ein paar, vorallem eines im Wohnzimmer bei meinem Handnähprojekt. Dem ging eine lange Diskussion mit meinem Mann voraus. Ich hatte die Nadeln immer nur in einem kleinen Plastikschälchen. Alt und brüchig und bereits mehrmals heruntergefallen war dieses Schälchen kein sicherer ort für Stecknadeln. Und mein Mann fand es nicht lustig in der Kuscheldecke auf dem Sofa Nadeln zu finden. Da musste ein Nadelkissen her. Für das Handnähprojekt habe ich mir irgendwann mal 50 Nadeln abgezählt. So weiß ich immer, wieviele Hexagons ich gerade bearbeite und habe einen Überblick. Der Rest der Nadeln ist ins Nähzimmer verbannt und seit neusesten in diese schöne kleine Schale umgezogen. Neben der Maschine finde ich das praktischer als ein Nadelkissen.

Needles - a quilter needs many of them. My favorite are these with the colorful end. Classic ones. I have some pincussions too - esspecially one for my handsewing project in the living room. After a long discussion with my husband I made myself one. My box for my pins was old and crumbly and it has been fallen down sometimes. Not really safe. And my husband does`t like to find pins in our fluffy blanket in the livingroom when he cuddles in. A pincussion should help. For my handsewing project, I counted 50 pins out of my box. When I do work on new hexagons for my big handsewing project, I alway know how much hexagons I made and how much I will need to make in the future. The rest stays in the sewing room and moved into this little nice bowl. Having the bowl of pins next to my mashine works better for me than a cussion.

Aber zurück zu unserem Stoff, der ein Quilt wird. Nach einer Tasse Kaffee kam die Lösung. Reihe für Reihe werden nun die Dreiecke zusammengenäht. Ich habe alle Dreiecke einer Reihe immer an der gleichen Seite zusammengesteckt und diese Seite mit einer Nadel markiert. Am Ende habe ich die Haufen mit Zahlen versehen und dann konnte ich diese mit dem Kettverfahren ganz schnell durch die Nähmaschine jagen. Glücklicherweise half mein Schatz mir beim Stecken der Reihen - er wollte dann doch wieder an sein Puzzle:-) Jeder Außenstehende hat sich bereits mehrmals gedacht, so ein Aufwand. Die Alte muss verrückt sein.

But back to our fabric that becomes a quilt. After a cup of coffee - I found the solution. I needed to sew the triangles row for row together. I pinned all triangles in the same way and marked the sewing side with a pin. In the end I gave every pile of triangles a number and chain-pieced them together. That goes really quick. Luckily my darling helped me pinning the triangles - and he wanted to go on with his puzzle :-) Every outstanding is thinking - Crazy - she is crazy.

Ihr fragt euch, wie man beim Chain-Piecing - dem Kettennähen den Überblick behält und nicht mit den Teilen durcheinander kommt - gaaaaanz einfach. Während des Nähens ziehe ich die Stecknadel aus der Seite auf der die Naht ist und stecke sie in den oben liegenden Stoff. Nachdem ich alle Reihen in gleicher Art und Weise gesteckt habe, weiß ich, dass die Naht immer rechts sein muss. Und damit sich die Dreiecke beim Chain-Piecing nicht verdrehen, markiere ich mit der Nadel die richtige Seite.
Dann wieder bügeln und erneut zusammenstecken. Immer oben drauf kommt die Stecknadel und so weiter. Am Ende habe ich - ich kann es igendwie selbst kaum glauben - alle Reihen ohne Fehler zusammengenäht. In nur zwei Tagen.

You are asking how to keep track not to make any sewing mistake during the chain piecing - soooooooo simple. While I sew two triangles together, I put out the pin and pin it to the upper fabric of the two triangles. After pinning all triangles the same way, I know, my seam needs to be on the right side. Und to be safe from turning around during chain-piecing, I marked the right side with the pin. Then iron the seams open and pin again. Remember - The needle markes the upper side of the piece. Keep on going. In the end - I can`t believe it - I pieced all rows together without any faults. In two days.

Damit man bei den Reihen auch nicht durcheinander kommt habe ich alle Reihen auf der rechten Seite mit Nummern versehen. Nun muss ich nur noch die Reihen stecken - wichtig, sonst trifft man nicht die richtigen Nahtübergänge - und die langen, langen Reihen zusammennähen. Dabei kann man zwischen drin beim bügeln und Reihen stecken immer wieder Fern sehen oder sich prima unterhalten.

To keep on track not to get crazy with the rows, each row has a number on the right side. Now I need to assemble the rows. Very important - pinning - if you don`t pin, you will not match your seams quite good as with pinning. Sew these long long row together. You can chat or watch tv while you iron the rows and pin the next piece.

Aus 17 Teilen (Reihen) werden neun.

Make nine pieces (rows) out of 17.

Aus neun Teilen werden vier, aus vier werden zwei und letztendlich wird es ein großes Quilttop.
Und wenn frau dann davorsteht ist das einfach nur ein tolles Gefühl.

Stolz teilt frau das Bild mit allen, die es sehen dürfen, denn dieser Quilt wird ein Geschenk. Ich zeige euch Ende August das komplette Werk. Viele Wows, super, Daumen hoch und Grinse-smilies kommen zurück und - ein Wink mit dem Zaunpfahl von der Schwiegermutter, was sie denn machen muss, um auch einen zu bekommen. Hmm, vielleicht fällt mir da demnächst was ein, den Zaunpfahl - vielleicht eher ein Laternenmast oder ein Leuchtturm - den habe ich gesehen.

Four out of nine pieces and two out of four and in the end - there will be one big quilttop made out of two pieces. Standing right in front of it gives such a great feeling and proudness.

Proud you are going to share the pictures with all that are allowed to see it, because this will be a gift. I can show you full pictures end of august. Lots of wows, great, thumbs up and smilings returns and - a broad hint from the mother-in-law, asking what she needs to do to get one for herself. Hmm, maybe I have an idea - I have seen the broad hint - better a lamp pole or a lighthouse.

Okay. Man könnte jetzt auch sagen - ein Quilt ist doch quasi Stoff. Jaaaaaaa, dann müsste man aber sagen eine ganz besondere Art von Stoff. Ein Stoff, der aus ganz vielen verschiedenen Stoffen gemacht ist. - Genug davon. Hier mal ein selbstkritischer Blick auf die Arbeit einer Quilterin.

Alles beginnt damit, dass man sich ein Buch mit einer Anleitung kauft, die man unbedingt nähen will. Oder sich schenken lässt. Ich habe die Farbbücher von Vanessa Christenson mir teilweise schenken lassen und den Rest auf der Quilt Con in Pasadena selbst gekauft. Zu Beginn schaut man sich bei einer feinen Tasse Kaffee und einem Stück Kuchen die Anleitung an. Voller Vorfreude blättert man durch die grandiosen Fotografien, sieht sich schon im Gedanken mit dem Quilt kuscheln und bestellt jede Menge Stoff (Siehe Bild oben, das sind ca. 11 Meter). Ob frau die wirklich komplett braucht? Jaein, aber was zu viel ist, kann ja in die Restekiste und damit in den bereits überquillenden Stoffschrank wandern, Stoffreste kann eine Quilterin nicht wegwerfen und rechnet die beim Stoffkauf auch immer mit ein:-) Nebenbei bemerkt - man missachtet auch völlig den Zeitaufwand des neuen Projekt, welches in drei Monaten fertig sein soll...

Okay - you can say, a quilt is fabric. Yeeeeees but then you musst say a special piece of fabric that is made out of many fabrics - enough from that. Have a nice self-critical view on the work of a quilter.

It all begins with a new book, the quilter bought, to sew this new quilt she saw in the book. Or she get it as a gift. I have all color theory books from Vanessa Christenson - parts ot them as gifts and the rest was bought at the Quilt Con in Pasadena. First you look through the book with all the great colors and pictures and read the instructions having a cup of coffee and a piece of cake. With all the gread pictures of perfect quilts you see yourself cuddling up this beauty and you ignore the complexity of the project. Ordering a lot of fabric - round about 12 yards - do I really need them? Yeno - but if there is a leftover - I will stack it up in my stash and use for another project. A quilter can not throw fabric away - she is adding them to the needed fabric requirements of the project.

Nach dem Stoffkauf, natürlich werden dabei auch diverse Charmpacks, eine Jelly Roll und diverse kleinere dringend benötigte Untensilien bestellt:-), wird gewaschen. Dann kommt das Stoffe bügeln. Ganz ehrlich. Einen frisch gewaschenen Stoff bügeln macht schon Spaß, ist aber bei der Menge - 11 Meter - irgendwann echt ermüdend. Das wird schon, Motivation. Und dann geht es auch schon los. Rollschneider her, Lineal, Anleitung lesen und schneiden, schneiden, schneiden. Für diesen Quilt braucht man wahnsinnig viele Streifen Stoff. Diese näht frau wieder zu ganz vielen Streifensets zusammen. So manch Außenstehender fragt sich bereits hier - Mann oh Mann, was für ein Aufwand, erst waschen, bügeln, schneiden wieder zusammenähen, bügeln - die muss ja eine Geduld haben.

After buying the fabric - of course there will be some charmpacks, a jellyroll and diffrent small things a quilter needs - you need to wash. Then - ironing. Seriously, ironing a new fabric is fun - but not with 12 yards is really annoying. We can do that, motivation. Und then the fun starts. Rotary cutter on, ruler check, pattern check and go cut, cut, cut. This quilt needs a lot of fabric stripes. These wil be sewn together to a lot of stripsets. Outstanding people are asking - Men, a lot of work. washing, ironing, cutting, sewing, ironing - you need a lot of patience.

Ihr seht, es ist ein ziemlicher Stapel geworden. Aber damit nicht genug. Der Außenstehende schlägt jetzt beide Hände über den Kopf zusammen und ruft - Ernsthaft? Nun ja, die Quilterin zerschneidet die Stoffstreifen in Dreiecke. Unzählige Dreiecke. Der Außenstehende denkst sich inzwischen - die spinnen doch, diese Quilter.

You can see, there is a whole stack of them. But not enough. The outstanding throws the hands up in horror - serious? Yes - the quilter cuts the whole stack of stripsets into triangles. A lot of triangles. The outstanding thinks - they are crazy, these quilters.

Alle Stoffstreifen zerschnitten belegt man am Besten, und in Ermangelung einer Designwall, das bereits leergeräumte Puzzlezimmer des Mannes um den Quilt auszulegen. Man weiß ja schließlich nicht, ob man es schafft, heute alles zusammenzunähen. Und dort kann man das schon mal liegen lassen, denn der Mann puzzelt eh nicht weiter und in der Küche wäre der Quilt schlecht auf dem Boden. Alle Möglichkeiten müssen ausgeschöpft werden. Im Bild oben seht ihr nur einen Teil der ca. 400 Dreiecke, die für diesen Quilt geschnitten werden.

After all this cutting you need to block a room for the layout - if you do not have a design wall. For me the empty puzzle room of my husband worked great. No one knows how fast you can sew this quilt together and no one thinks that the husband is going to work on the puzzle this eve. You cannot leave the quilt on the floor in the kitchen, would you? You need to use every possibility. In the picture above there is just a part of the round about 400 triangles needed for this quilt.

Frau dachte sich die rote Decke wird schon ausreichen - wieder mal zu faul um die Inch-Angaben in cm umzurechnen um zu sehen, wie groß der Quilt wirklich wird. Wie man sieht, er ist größer. Und da verbringt man nun Stunden auf dem Boden kniend und legt ein farbenprächtiges Muster auf dem Boden aus. Der Außenstehende schüttelt nur noch den Kopf.

Too lazy to calculate the finished size from inches to centimeter - this red blanket will be enough. As you can see - the quilt is bigger. Afer all this cutting you are sitting on the floor, laying out this beautiful quilt on the floor. The outstanding persons shakes his head.

Am Ende werden es ca. 17 Reihen mit insgesamt ca. 400 Dreiecken sein, die dort auf dem Boden liegen. Jetzt erstmal einen Kaffee trinken und überlegen, wie man diese Reihen am sinnvollsten und ohne viel hin und her gerenne zusammennähen kann.

In the end there will be 17 rows with a complet of 400 triangles that lays on the for. Now it is time for a coffee and time to thik about the best way to sew this together without running from room to room.
